Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession
Organized and made possible by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation
LSU Museum of Art
Shaw Center for the Arts
100 Lafayette Street
225-389-7200
January 24, 2009 through April 19, 2009Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession is a complete retrospective of the artist's career and includes more than 60 bronzes, from small studies to monumental works. The works were chosen according to major projects and themes of Rodin's career, such as The Gates of Hell, The Burghers of Calais, and partial figures. The exhibition spans the length of Rodin's career from his earliest bust of his father, Jean Baptiste Rodin, to his later studies of dancing figures. In addition to the bronzes, there are works on paper, photographs, portraits of the artist, and an educational model that demonstrates the complexities of the lost-wax casting process, Rodin's favored method of sculptural reproduction.

Armed with catchy melodies, divine moves and gobs of hair product, Altar Boyz is a hilarious, holy-inspiring musical comedy about five small-town boys — Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham — trying to save the world one screaming fan at a time. Presented as a concert in real-time, Altar Boyz sweetly satirizes the phenomenon of boy bands, the popularity of Christian-themed music, and excessive product placement in contemporary American culture. The group’s amusingly pious pop act features slick dance moves, heavenly harmonies, and laugh-out-loud lyrics such as “Girl You Make Me Wanna Wait” and “Jesus Called Me on My Cell Phone.” But underneath the witty song parodies, slangy dialogue, and comically sexy dances, Altar Boyz offers an intricately constructed narrative about five young friends whose emotional and moral journeys bring them to a personal and professional crossroads.

Other shows in the Great Performances series for this season:
The unrivaled Queen of Cabaret leaves you spellbound as she works her magic with the repertoire of one of the greatest songwriting teams of the 20th century. With numbers such as “My Funny Valentine” and “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered,” she brings the era of big band and jazz alive. Marcovicci dazzles and delights the crowd with her elegance and charm in addition to her exceptional vocals. One of the great grati_ cations of this artist’s show is the brainpower with which she puts history and music together. She digs deep into Lorenz Hart’s psyche and his association with Richard Rodgers.
Marcovicci has been singing cabaret for more than twenty years at the Algonquin Hotel in New York, and has taught Master Classes on the art of cabaret in several cities. She has also starred in TV shows such as Love is a Many Splendored Thing and has appeared in movies such as The Front with Woody Allen and in many on- and off-Broadway productions.
